What are Keywords?

Keywords begin …..

when someone types a word or phrase in to a search engine text box and hits ‘Search’.

That word or phrase then becomes a keyword (or key phrase).

Search engines record every keyword that is used when someone searches, and they also calculate how often a particular keyword or phrase is used.

Why are Keywords so Important?

The main function of a search engine is to match a keyword with a website. After all, you wouldn’t be using Google for searches if you typed in ‘apples’ and you kept getting sites all about oranges. And without people coming to Google, Google would have no paying advertisers, and therefore no money. For this reason Google is very concerned about giving searchers what they are looking for.

If you have a website and it’s filled with words people very seldom type in, you won’t get a lot of visitors. However if you make sure that you repeat keywords that are frequently searched for by adding them to your site, then you have a much better chance of your site coming up in the searches.

If you want your website to be found on the Internet, Google must be able to match a keyword from the content in your site with what people are searching for. The best way to make this happen is to make sure you include your most important keywords into your site copy.
